Conference "Ethics, legality, economy: an integrated, effective approach"
"Ethics, legality, economy: an integrated, effective approach" is the title of the conference that Intesa Sanpaolo has organised at the Gallerie d'Italia-Naples to reflect on the issues of ethics, legality and economy, which are central to the sustainable, inclusive growth of Italy's communities.
The event alternated moments of reflection with the presentation of case histories by third sector actors committed in particular in Southern Italy to rebuilding a sense of community through ethics and legality.
At the conference, Gian Maria Gros-Pietro, Chairman of Intesa Sanpaolo, emphasized the Bank's commitment to serving as the foremost banking institution in Southern Italy. He stated, "We are determined to increasingly fulfill this role," with a focus on supporting the region's economy and providing an alternative for sectors "in need of liberation from intolerable dependencies”.
"In the analysis of the social economy, revisiting the concepts of individual value, self-respect, respect for others, and environmental consideration, has never been more crucial. Ethics and legality - areas also addressed by the Bank through the Charitable Fund - play a pivotal role in fostering the development of a healthy, constructive society. This is exemplified by some of the regenerative instances of community spirit illustrated today."

Speakers at the conference held on 8 November 2023 included Anna Maria Tarantola, Chairwoman of the Centesimus Annus Pro Pontifice Foundation, Nicola Gratteri, Public Prosecutor at the Court of Naples, Vincenzo Linarello, Co-founder and Chairman of GOEL Gruppo Cooperativo and Andrea Lecce, Head of the Intesa Sanpaolo Impact Division.
The Intesa Sanpaolo Charitable Fund
Under the chairmanship of the Bank, in 2023 the Intesa Sanpaolo Charitable Fund allocated €20 million to support the projects of third sector entities committed to combating situations of adversity, exacerbated by the health, economic and social crisis of recent years.
The Charitable Fund took action throughout Italy, but also had a special focus on the regions of Southern Italy:
- in 2022 the South and Islands received 25% of the resources, with Sicily and Campania the top regions in the area: they benefited from disbursements of around €1 million for the former and €800,000 for the latter, equal to around 7% and 6% of the funds allocated
- the projects supported include Villaggio Goel in Siderno, in the province of Reggio Calabria, where several social economy activities will be incubated in a single space: a Social Innovation Centre will be created, which in addition to supporting the local economy by offering an ethical alternative to workers and entrepreneurs, will be a visible symbol of the process of re-appropriating territory in the heart of the Locride area.
Rita Caprio, President of L'Uomo e il Legno Cooperativa Sociale, an organisation active at Secondigliano Prison in Naples that reintegrates inmates into the labour market and thus reduces the risk of recidivism; Chiara Ciccarelli, Coordinator of the Compare Association, which works in the Scampia area with children from families at risk (6-10 years old) and their families to prevent and promote socially positive lifestyles that keep minors away from illegality; Simmaco Perillo, President of Al di là dei Sogni Cooperativa Sociale, who spoke about the project "La Fattoria dei Sogni" carried out on the property confiscated from the Camorra "Alberto Varone" located in Sessa Aurunca, in the upper Casertano area, entrusted to the Cooperative, where didactic farm activities, social agriculture and sustainable tourism are carried out and operators and individuals belonging to fragile groups work, finding the dignity of new walks of life through job placement; Angelica Viola, Head of Development Orsa Maggiore Cooperativa Sociale, established in Naples in 1995 and composed mainly of women, with the aim of contributing to the construction of a better, welcoming and supportive society, through the promotion of rights and services for vulnerable individuals and families.
Talks by those who work in an integrated, effective manner for those who choose to operate within the law included addresses by Salvatore Cuoci, Coordinator of the Don Peppe Diana Committee, an association founded in memory of Don Giuseppe Diana, victim of the Camorra, which promotes and supports activities and initiatives on topics of social utility. It manages a confiscated property, Casa don Diana, where events are held to promote civil commitment, the reuse of confiscated property, and the culture of legality, in cooperation with numerous third sector organisations and schools in the area; Don Tonino Palmese, President of the Pol.i.s. Foundation, the Campania Region's operational tool for developing systemic actions for more effective reuse of property seized from criminals and support for victims of crime to limit the situations of greatest personal or social distress suffered by victims and their family members as a result of crime.
