"DÉPLACÉ·E·S", solo exhibition by JR, at the Gallerie d'Italia – Torino

The Gallerie d'Italia - Torino, Intesa Sanpaolo's museum in the city, is hosting "JR - DÉPLACÉ·E·S", the first solo exhibition in Italy of the French artist JR, world-famous for projects that combine photography, public art and social commitment.

The exhibition, curated by Arturo Galansino, focuses on the problems of migrants and refugees in today's crisis zones, combining different expressive languages such as street art, photography and video installations: the aim is to spur reflection on the difficult conditions in which thousands of people find themselves today due to conflicts, wars, famine and climate change.

JR's monumental public art projects have interacted with large numbers of people and involved entire communities, from Brazilian favelas to a maximum-security prison in California, from the Louvre Pyramid to the Egyptian pyramids, from the border between Israel and Palestine to that between Mexico and the United States.

Through the exhibition, the Intesa Sanpaolo museum reaffirms its focus on encouraging reflection on today's urgent challenges, in keeping with the Bank's commitment to sustainable, inclusive growth.

The Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation is collaborating with the Gallerie d'Italia,  involving in the exhibition’s correlated events the various territorial entities with which it is engaged in constructing a more inclusive society.

The Turin museum, together with those of Milan, Naples and Vicenza, is part of Intesa Sanpaolo's Gallerie d'Italia museum project.

The opening of the exhibition was preceded by a public art performance involving hundreds of people in the streets of the centre of Turin. Under the careful direction of the artist himself, five large canvases depicting images of children met during his visits to refugee camps – some of whom also present at the exhibition – were carried through the city's streets.
