INTESA SANPAOLO AT SALONE DEL MOBILE.MILAN

"MANUFACTURING EXCELLENCE AND ITALIAN STYLE WORLDWIDE,

COMPARING EXPERIENCES FOR GROWTH

ON INTERNATIONAL MARKETS”

·        Italy is first in Europe for specialised design activities: € 6.3 billion turnover (16.4% of the EU27 total), around 70 thousand employees, almost 20% of the European total, followed by France and Germany.

·        Roscio: "We support the Italian Style supply chains in sustainable investments and the search for new international corridors. In four years, we have disbursed some € 20 billion in financing to “Made in Italy” corporate customers for globalisation, business management, dimensional growth, and generational handover”.

Milan, 9 April 2025 - At the centre of Intesa Sanpaolo's annual appointment at the Salone del Mobile.Milan, design is the common denominator for developing transversal supply chains, connecting production sectors and expanding the presence of Italian industry abroad. The Group, an institutional partner of the international event for the ninth year running as evidence of its commitment to enhancing and supporting Italian design, contributes to the sustainable growth of companies in the supply chain and the promotion of Made in Italy at an international level.

In order to strengthen the global presence of the excellence of Italian style and promote its sustainable and lasting development, Intesa Sanpaolo has dedicated a specific proposal to the “Made in Italy” supply chains, within which design plays a central role both for the upstream supply chain - in the development of materials and innovative solutions - and the downstream supply chain, in a B2B logic that embraces many outlet sectors.

The Intesa Sanpaolo Group, through the Supply Chain Development Programme developed by Banca dei Territori Division headed by Stefano Barrese, has signed contracts with over 200 “Made in Italy” production chains, involving more than 25,000 employees and over 6,000 suppliers, generating a business turnover of over € 22 billion. An industrial heritage of excellence that Intesa Sanpaolo aims to strengthen by creating new supply chain processes to facilitate access to credit for smaller businesses and support them in their recovery and in digitalization and green transition processes. Through collaborations with strategic partners, Intesa Sanpaolo assists SMEs in international markets, facilitating access to new trade corridors and offering a dedicated business strategy service that combines finance, consulting and networking.

Highly topical issues such as the impact on exports, production flexibility and the adaptability of Italian manufacturing to market changes were the subject of reflection and analysis in the talk that Italy's leading banking group hosted today at the Drafting Futures Arena, entitled "Manufacturing Excellence and Italian Style in the World - Comparing Experiences for Growth in International Markets”. The round table with Anna Roscio, Executive Director Sales & Marketing of the Intesa Sanpaolo Banca dei Territori Division, and important SMEs of “Made in Italy” - DEA (Olmi Quarrata, Pistoia) for the textile sector, Lario Hotels (Como) for tourism and luxury hotels, Yachtline1618 (Bientina, Pisa) for the nautical sector and Riva1920 (Cantù, Como) for high-end furniture - offered a cross-sectional look at the connections of Italian design with other supply chains in the country, capable of enhancing the Italian craft heritage and making it increasingly competitive in international markets. Architect Alexander M. Bellman, a leading player in the fields of lighting design and virtual technologies, emphasised the Italian cultural heritage and technological innovation as a prerogative of uniqueness for design in the world.

The analysis on the perspectives of the leading sectors of “Made in Italy” explained by Stefania Trenti, Head of Industry & Local Economies at Intesa Sanpaolo's Research Department, highlighted how design can be a cultural and economic agent for the diffusion of Made in Italy in the world, for GDP and employment growth.

Anna Roscio, Executive Director Sales & Marketing Enterprises Banca dei Territori Division Intesa Sanpaolo comments: "For “Made in Italy”, design represents the common thread linking creativity and innovation, as well as the interaction of the various Italian Style supply chains with significant potential for development in new sectors and geographies. Quality and uniqueness must be supported by investment strategies that are attentive to innovation and international growth, objectives that Intesa Sanpaolo supports with funding, training and enhancement for start-ups and SMEs, accompanying them on paths of economic and industrial growth. Over the past four years, we have supported “Made in Italy” client companies with around € 20 billion in financing for globalisation and export processes, as well as for business management aspects, dimensional growth and generational handover".

Intesa Sanpaolo is the point of reference for SMEs seeking to invest in acceleration and innovation programmes. Through Up2Stars - the optimisation and acceleration programme for innovative start-ups - the Bank helps companies grow by digitising and modernising their processes. The aim is to build an innovation ecosystem, where start-ups and companies can work together to strengthen “Made in Italy” and successfully face the challenges of the future.

Summary of the Study “Prospects for “Made in Italy” supply chains” by the Intesa Sanpaolo Research Department

International markets will continue to be a key driver for the growth of “Made in Italy” companies: the propensity to export is expected to rise to 77.2% in 2027 (it was 60% in 2012).

The high-end of the product range will be the main driver: Italy's market share on high-price products is 11.2%, compared to a 4.6% share on medium- and low-price products. Behind this result is the strength of the “Made in Italy” supply chain, with production highly concentrated in highly specialised areas, where know-how and craftsmanship skills are handed down, combined with the high aesthetic level of design production.

Design is a key competence for “Made in Italy”, serving a broad spectrum of activities. In addition to high inward investment, Italy is the leading European country for specialised design activities: € 6.3 billion turnover (16.4% of the EU27 total in 2023), with just under 70 thousand employees, almost 20% of the European total (followed by France with 55 thousand employees and Germany with 53 thousand).

US protectionist policies could accelerate the process of finding new markets, which has already been going on for several years. Confirming this trend, an Intesa Sanpaolo survey conducted using the network of globalisation specialists, shows how Italian companies are already moving on this front, looking with increasing attention to new trade routes near and far, including India and North Africa.
