Washington/Milan, 17 October 2025 – Intesa Sanpaolo, through its IMI Corporate & Investment Banking Division, continues to reinforce its role in the United States, having supported some of the most significant transactions over the past three years, totalling approximately USD 50 billion. A delegation from the Bank, led by Mauro Micillo, Head of the IMI CIB Division, is currently attending the International Monetary Fund meetings in Washington.
Mauro Micillo commented:“The recent transactions that we have led confirm the strength of our US presence and our ability to mobilise capital by offering structured solutions in one of the world’s most competitive markets. By engaging international investors, Intesa Sanpaolo helps deliver projects that accelerate infrastructure modernisation and the energy transition, reinforcing our role as a long-term strategic partner in global initiatives. The programs launched by the US Administration in strategic sectors such as infrastructure, innovation and artificial intelligence offer new investment opportunities. Our IMI Division is ready to expand its footprint in this market with an even more active and long-term commitment.”
In the first eight months of 2025, global project finance volumes exceeded €200 billion, with IMI CIB involved in transactions worth over €30 billion, representing approximately 15% of the total market. Between 2018 and 2024, the US market grew by an average 20% per year in project finance volumes, while the IMI CIB Division’s activity grew even faster — nearly 34% per year — demonstrating its ability to seize opportunities and consolidate its position in a constantly evolving and competitive landscape.
To support this growth, the Structured Finance team in the US was recently strengthened, both in terms of personnel and expertise, with the aim of deepening client relationships and enhancing the Division’s strategic position in this key market.
Thanks to an international platform of integrated services – combining project finance, capital markets, and advisory – the Division is a key partner for major corporate clients and financial institutions in the US, with a strong focus on energy, infrastructure, and digital sectors.
Intesa Sanpaolo, through its IMI CIB Division, has taken a leading role not only in providing financing, but also in delivering advisory services, managing bond issuances, and offering interest rate risk hedging solutions — as shown by its most significant transactions in the United States, across sectors such as transport and energy infrastructure, telecommunications, renewable energy, and data centres:
- AT&T (2025): Intesa Sanpaolo acted as Joint Lead Manager and Active Bookrunner in a three-tranche bond issuance totalling €2.75 billion launched by AT&T in 2025.
- Bighorn Project (2024): Intesa Sanpaolo participated in a USD 3.4 billion financing for the construction and start-up of a 300 MW hyperscale data centre in Reno, Nevada.
- Cider Project (2024): IMI CIB Division structured and partially underwrote, together with a pool of international banks, a USD 870 million long-term loan for Greenbacker Renewable Energy Company to acquire, build and operate Cider, the largest solar PV park in the State of New York.
- SunZia (2023): Intesa Sanpaolo structured and partially underwrote a USD 8.8 billion green credit facility for the SunZia project – the largest green energy infrastructure in the US, aimed at producing wind energy and transporting clean electricity from New Mexico to Arizona and California.
- CEMEX SAB de CV (2023): IMI Securities was among five active bookrunners in CEMEX’s USD 1 billion hybrid green bond issuance – the company’s first of its kind.
- JFK New Terminal One (2022): Intesa Sanpaolo organised and underwrote, alongside a pool of banks, a USD 6.63 billion financing for Phase A of the New Terminal One at JFK International Airport in New York — the largest airport infrastructure investment in the US.
These transactions highlight the capacity of the Intesa Sanpaolo Group, led by CEO Carlo Messina, to act as a strategic, long-term partner for global enterprises.

Presence and Strategy of the IMI CIB Division in the Americas
Intesa Sanpaolo has a longstanding presence in the United States, rooted in the heritage of Banca Commerciale Italiana, which has been active in infrastructure and project finance since the 1980s. The US is the IMI CIB Division’s largest market outside Italy.
The Division operates in the Americas through an integrated platform that includes the New York branch, a US broker-dealer Intesa Sanpaolo IMI Securities Corp. (ISP IMI Securities), and a representative office in Washington, D.C., dedicated to institutional relations with key multilateral organisations. The platform also includes Intesa Sanpaolo Brazil – Banco Múltiplo in São Paulo, a wholly owned subsidiary.
The New York branch actively supports major infrastructure and energy projects in the US, working alongside leading institutional investors and large US and international corporations. Located in the historic One William Street building and staffed by over 200 professionals, the branch serves as the Division’s operational hub in the Americas. It operates under a banking licence issued by the State of New York, supervised by both the Federal Reserve and the New York State Department of Financial Services, and has been recognised as a Financial Holding Company since 2019.
Through its presence in the Americas, the IMI CIB Division supports:
- over 150 global corporate groups, including US Fortune 500 clients and leading Latin American companies in sectors such as infrastructure, energy, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals and food;
- around 50 clients among major financial institutions: banks, insurance companies, private equity firms, sovereign wealth funds, pension funds and infrastructure funds;
- over 600 entities linked to Italian companies (US subsidiaries of Italian corporate groups).
ISP IMI Securities plays a crucial role in the world’s largest capital market. Registered with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), the New York-based firm employs over 55 professionals and offers a full suite of investment banking and capital markets services. Its main role is to connect US investors with European financial assets — with a particular focus on promoting Italian excellence on international markets and strengthening ties between Italian corporates and US investors.
Thanks to its well-established presence and ongoing commitment, Intesa Sanpaolo continues to strengthen its position as a strategic bridge between Europe and the United States, supporting growth-oriented investments.
