World Earth Day 2024
World Earth Day is celebrated on April 22, which aims to raise people's awareness of the need to protect the planet and promote concrete actions to reduce the environmental impact of human activities.
Since its establishment in 1970 it has been one of the most important environmental events in the world, which involves non-governmental organisations, environmental groups, but also governments, companies and private citizens, with events, meetings and seminars, to promote environmental education and more eco-sustainable behavior .
Intesa Sanpaolo has confirmed its commitment for the climate and the environment, defined in the 2022-2025 Business Plan, by launching the Think Forestry project, for the planting and preservation of 100 million trees in Turin and Rome in 2023 and in Naples and Varese in 2024.
In addition to the focus on natural capital, actions to combat climate change continue:
- Carbon neutrality objective for own emissions by 2030, with 100% renewable energy at Group level in 2030 (over 88% of energy purchased from renewable sources at Group level in 2023 and important energy efficiency programs in own offices);
- intermediate reduction targets for 2030, aligned with Net-Zero in the high emission sectors (Oil&Gas, energy production, automotive, coal mining, the latter with phase out by 2025, iron&steel, commercial real estate), with a 22% reduction in emissions in these sectors compared to 2022
- zero net emissions by 2050 for loan and investment portfolios and for asset management and insurance activities
- support in the ecological, green and circular transition of companies with almost 45 billion euros of the 76 billion euros allocated within Mission 2 of the NRRP
- support for the Circular Economy with a dedicated plafond of 8 billion euro and 8.7 billion euro already disbursed between 2022 and 2023.
The Division's foreign banks, as a whole, planned awareness campaigns on social media for the day and with the involvement of colleagues.
In particular, we highlight: the initiative promoted by Intesa Sanpaolo Banka Bosna i Hercegovina which launches, from 22 April, a campaign which involves the planting of a tree for every new current account opened at the Bank; Intesa Sanpaolo Slovenia, in association with Beekeeping Slovenia, is committed to burying honey trees; Alexbank, thanks to a volunteer event, will educate local communities on the cultivation of plants for food use and to create vegetable gardens in urban spaces and finally BIB has organized an artistic exhibition designed for students and dedicated to "artistic recycling".
