With Fincantieri for the energy transition of maritime and air transport

Intesa Sanpaolo supports the energy transition of maritime and air transport. To foster the decarbonisation of two sectors so strategic for the European economy,  the bank and Fincantieri – in collaboration with RLCF Alliance* – organised the conference “Accelerating the Transition in the Maritime and Aviation Sectors”.

Aviation contributes directly to the European GDP with more than €110 billion per year and the maritime sector with around €54 billion: an active public-private partnership is increasingly necessary to finance the amount of investment needed for the energy transition.

Intesa Sanpaolo's IMI CIB Division has long been a major player in project finance and sustainable infrastructure financing, both in Italy and internationally: the bank has participated in projects totalling €220 billion, which corresponds to 15% of total volumes (between 2018 and 2023).

“Accelerating the Transition in the Maritime and Aviation Sectors” – the Conference

Sustainability goals are central to government policies, recovery plans and the strategic choices of companies: this is why the debate involved representatives from the Italian government, European institutions, trade associations, the business world and research.

Among the main topics of the conference:

  • European and national initiatives for energy transition in the aviation and maritime transport sector
  • regulatory news
  • technologies available in the field of green fuels
  • financial solutions to support renewal processes
  • research activities required to improve the range and efficiency of proposed solutions

Intesa Sanpaolo for the green transition

From 2021 to 31 March 2024, Intesa Sanpaolo's new lending in support of the green economy and ecological transition exceeded €47 billion.

The Group's energy acquired from renewable sources amounts to 90%.

The initiative confirms Intesa Sanpaolo's commitment to the energy transition, as set out in the 2022-2025 Business Plan presented by CEO Carlo Messina.

* The RLCF Alliance was established in 2022 and promoted by the European Commission's DG MOVE (Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport) to encourage the transition to fuels with a lower environmental impact in air and maritime transport. Intesa Sanpaolo's IMI CIB Division has participated in the Alliance since its inception and leads the working group on “Project Bankability”.
