Intesa Sanpaolo aids restoration of San Francesco Church in Amatrice
3 February 2025
Intesa Sanpaolo donates €6.6mln to support the reconstruction of the Church of San Francesco in Amatrice, after it was destroyed by an earthquake in 2016.
The operation, through the Art Bonus, contributes to the rebirth of the territory and its social, economic and cultural fabric, as it allows for the restoration of a masterpiece that is part of its very history and identity.
The Church of San Francesco and its adjoining convent was the most important historical building in Amatrice. Located in the historical centre of the town, the Romanesque-Gothic building was built between the 14th and 15th centuries.
In further detail:
The reconstruction project is thanks to a Memorandum of Understanding (coordinated by the Struttura Commissariale Sisma 2016) between Italy's Ministry of Culture, the Struttura Commissariale Sisma 2016, the Municipality of Amatrice and Intesa Sanpaolo.
The action taken was also promoted by the Dino and Ernesta Santarelli Foundation.
Work is scheduled for completion in June 2027.
The Art Bonus is a tax credit for cash donations in support of culture and entertainment in Italy, to encourage patronage of institutions that form an important part of Italy's cultural heritage.
