The permanent collections of the Gallerie d’Italia in Naples
The Gallerie d’Italia in Naples host many works from Intesa Sanpaolo’s collections, grouped in three different thematic tours, including Caravaggio’s masterpiece, The Martyrdom of Saint Ursula.
Neapolitan and southern Italian painting from the seventeenth century to the early decades of the 20th century
The tour dedicated to painting in Naples and southern Italy from the beginning of the 17th to the early decades of the 20th century is curated by Fernando Mazzocca and starts with the Martyrdom of Saint Ursula, the last canvas painted by Caravaggio. Among the other works exhibited: Judith beheading Holofernes by Louis Finson, Samson and Delilah by Artemisia Gentileschi, canvas by Bernardo Cavallino, a Holy Family by Battistello Caracciolo, Saint Francis of Assisi receives the Stigmata by Gerrit van Honthorst, Francesco Guarini’s Saint George and the Abduction of Helen by Luca Giordano.
Ceramics of Attica and Magna Graecia
The second tour, curated by Fabrizio Paolucci, is dedicated to the ceramics of Attica and Magna Graecia and brings together more than 500 examples of ceramics from the historic Caputi collection, created in Athens, Apulia and Lucania between the sixth and third centuries B.C., which perfectly exemplifies the various productions and workshops operating at that time in those territories.
Section dedicated to the Twentieth Century
The third tour, curated by Luca Massimo Barbero, displays a selection dedicated to the twentieth century and brings together works by those at the centre of the artistic experience of the time, with a particular focus on Naples and the cultural environment of the city: it ranges from the experiments of Lucio Fontana and Alberto Burri to the internationalism of artists like Gerhard Richter and Sol LeWitt, the Italian pop scenario of Mario Schifano, Giosetta Fioroni, and featuring Arte Povera with Gilberto Zorio, Alighiero Boetti and Giulio Paolini.
Some rooms in this section are intended to accommodate temporary initiatives, in dialogue and comparison, harmony and dissonance, with the works of the permanent collection.
