"Maria Callas. Portraits from the Intesa Sanpaolo Publifoto Archive"
"Maria Callas. Portraits from the Intesa Sanpaolo Publifoto Archive" is the title of the exhibition that the Gallerie d'Italia-Milan is dedicating to the opera singer, joining with other Milanese institutions for "Callas100", a set of initiatives celebrating the hundred-year anniversary of the great soprano's birth.
The exhibition, curated by Aldo Grasso, presents a selection of 91 images from the Intesa Sanpaolo Publifoto Archive covering the period from 1954 to 1970. In many cases, these are unpublished or never shown images, mostly portraying Callas in her everyday life offstage: in the street, at a restaurant, at the airport or on Onassis's megayacht, in Biki's atelier, at her home in Milan and in court, as well as alongside men and lifelong friends.
The Publifoto Archive holds over 1,500 photographs of Maria Callas – including negatives and vintage prints – representing an extraordinary historical and iconographic source for reconstructing the myth of a woman who shaped an era.
The Intesa Sanpaolo Publifoto Archive includes more than 7 million photographs by the Agency founded by Vincenzo Carrese in 1937, Italy's most important private photojournalism agency, established in the 1930s. Acquired by Intesa Sanpaolo in 2015 as part of a deal that kept it from being broken up, it is tended to and managed by the Intesa Sanpaolo Historical Archive at the Gallerie d'Italia in Turin.
The Milan museum, together with those of Naples, Turin and Vicenza, is part of Intesa Sanpaolo's Gallerie d'Italia museum project.
The exhibition, sponsored by the City of Milan, is the opening initiative in "Callas100", a set of initiatives organised for November and December by the City of Milan in collaboration with Teatro alla Scala, Gallerie d'Italia and Piccolo Teatro di Milano, to pay tribute to the famous artist.
Open to the public from 9 November 2023 to 18 February 2024.
