Art, once again protagonist at the Skyscraper

This year’s art exhibition features the painting Adoration of the shepherds by the Spanish painter Juan Bautista Maíno. The work was lent by the Hermitage of St. Petersburg in the framework of the three-year agreement between the Bank and the Russian museum, one of the most authoritative artistic institutions.
The exhibition, hosted by Spazio Trentacinque, is intended to be Intesa Sanpaolo’s gift for the city of Turin on the occasion of Christmas celebrations. The event is organized together with Fondazione Torino Musei.
In the painting the artist, faithfully following the Gospel of St. Luke, depicts the moment when a group of shepherds and angels adore the Child Jesus. The canvas contains an abundance of elements relating to Italian figurative culture, received by the author during the years of his training. The presence of the twilight landscape in the background is reminiscent of Brescia painting and, in particular, some works by Giovanni Gerolamo Savoldo; the shepherd who turns his back showing the dirty plants of his feet refers to Caravaggio’s naturalism; the angels on the upper part recall in a precise way those of Orazio Gentileschi’s L’Assunta, kept in Palazzo Madama-Museo Civico d’Arte Antica in Turin and coming from the church of Santa Maria al Monte dei Cappuccini; from the same master also derives the splendid light and enamelled colour.
That with the painting Adoration of the Shepherds by Maíno is the eighth edition of L’Ospite illustre, the exhibition curated and promoted by Intesa Sanpaolo which proposes an important work on temporary loan from prestigious Italian and foreign museums hosted in the Bank’s exhibition sites , the Gallerie d’Italia in Milan, Naples and Vicenza, and the skyscraper in Turin, which has become a museum space of the same Gallerie d’Italia.
On the occasion of the visit it will be also possible to admire α-cromactive, the installation developed by Migliore+Servetto Architects – as part of the event Luci d’Artista- for the skyscraper and suspended in the bioclimatic greenhouse.
