Intesa Sanpaolo sponsors UK’s first major Artemisia Gentileschi exhibition
Intesa Sanpaolo is sponsoring the first major exhibition dedicated to the 17th century painter Artemisia Gentileschi at the National Gallery London. In 1616, Artemisia became the first woman to gain membership in Florence’s Academy of the Arts of Drawing.
The exhibition provides a complete overview of the painter’s career with some 35 works including Artemisia’s paintings, drawings, sketches and private letters belonging to public and private collections from around the world.
The London exhibition dedicated to Artemisia Gentileschi is part of a broader project between Intesa Sanpaolo and the National Gallery that will include an exhibition dedicated to the artist in 2022 at the Gallerie d’Italia in Naples.
Besides supporting the exhibition, Intesa Sanpaolo helped to restore Artemisia’s altarpiece ‘The Martyrdom of St Januarius in the Amphitheatre’ from the Pozzuoli Cathedral, in Naples. The rarely-loaned work is part of the National Gallery exhibition.
Intesa Sanpaolo has undertaken numerous international projects with some of the world’s most prominent cultural institutions including the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
Preserving, promoting and sharing Italy’s historical and artistic heritage is an integral part of Intesa Sanpaolo’s social role. Intesa Sanpaolo believes that as the leading Italian bank, it must contribute not only to economic growth, but also to the country’s cultural and civic development.
