The Torlonia Marbles at the Gallerie d'Italia - Milan

The Gallerie d'Italia, the Intesa Sanpaolo Museum in Milan, is hosting “I Marmi Torlonia. Collezionare Capolavori. The Torlonia Marbles. Collecting Masterpieces” curated by Salvatore Settis and Carlo Gasparri: with 96 marbles from the Torlonia Collection, the most important private collection of classical statues, the exhibition is inaugurating the global exhibition programme of the collection.

Among the masterpieces that can be admired at the exhibition, there are also five new works which have been restored and brought back to their original splendour after scrupulous work at the Torlonia Laboratories: the majestic Sarcophagus in lènos with two spouses and a procession accompanying a magistrate, the statue of Dace prisoner, the bust of Antinous, the bust of Domitian, and the sculpture of the Leda with the swan.

After its inauguration in Rome, the Torlonia Marbles exhibition at the Gallerie d'Italia in Milan is the first stop in a tour of important international museums, that will end with the identification of a new permanent exhibition site for the Torlonia Museum.

The “I Marmi Torlonia. Collezionare Capolavori. The Torlonia Marbles. Collecting Masterpieces" exhibition stems from an agreement between the Torlonia Foundation and the Ministry of Culture - with the Directorate General for Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape and the Special Superintendence for Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of Rome - which is an example of public and private sector collaboration in the name of culture.

The “I Marmi Torlonia. Collezionare Capolavori. The Torlonia Marbles. Collecting Masterpieces” exhibition can be visited from 25 May to 18 September 2022.
