At the Niguarda hospital, Intesa Sanpaolo supports a "mother and child” space
Intesa Sanpaolo, together with the Niguarda Foundation, inaugurates a new space dedicated to new mothers and their babies at the Milan hospital.
More specifically, the Perinatal Mental Health Outpatient Clinic, set up and furnished thanks to the intervention of Intesa Sanpaolo, is intended for women with psychic and emotional fragility emerging during the perinatal period, to offer them:
- specific interventions by expert psychologists in the field of perinatal mental health
- interventions by nurses with paediatric expertise
involving the woman's family system.
The initiative is part of a long-term collaboration between Intesa Sanpaolo and the Niguarda Foundation, aimed at implementing activities to support patients and their families.
Perinatal mental health: some evidence
Epidemiological estimates show that about 20% of women suffer from mental disorders during gestation and/or after childbirth: the perinatal period is a time of extreme complexity as it can bring out for the first time or exacerbate mental disorders that compromise the well-being of the woman, the child and the entire family.
In Lombardy, with approximately 68,000 deliveries in 2020, it is estimated that about 7,000 women suffer from perinatal depression and that only a fraction of them are screened in a structured screening system and receive treatment (Source: Lombardy Region. Final document of the Technical Insight Group Diagnosis and Treatment Pathway for Perinatal Depression in Lombardy. 2016).
