Frankfurt-based journalists award Carlo Messina “European Banker of the Year”

Carlo Messina was officially proclaimed European Banker of the Year 2024 during the ceremony held in Frankfurt on 18 November 2025. The recognition had been awarded last June by The Group of 20+1, an international association of economic and financial journalists.
This acknowledgment confirms the CEO’s prominent role in the European banking landscape and highlights the Group’s contribution to key areas such as solidity, innovation, and sustainability. The event — part of Euro Finance Week — gathered more than 200 representatives from the European institutional and economic-financial community.

The reasons behind the recognition
Key reasons behind the recognition include the consistently excellent results achieved since 2013, Intesa Sanpaolo’s stock market value more than tripling, the Bank recording its highest net profit ever in 2024, the Group’s strong commitment to supporting the ecological transition and its role in social responsibility initiatives.
The award ceremony at the Römer in Frankfurt
The “European Banker of the Year 2024” award ceremony, held in Frankfurt in the Emperor’s Hall of the Römer, brought together over 200 guests, including representatives from the institutional and financial sectors. Among the attendees were: Fabrizio Bucci, the Italian Ambassador to Germany; Stephanie Wüst, Deputy Mayor and Head of the Department of Economy, Legal Affairs and City Marketing of Frankfurt; Sergio Ermotti, Group CEO of UBS Group AG and European Banker of the Year 2023; Albrecht F. Schirmacher, Chairman of The Group of 20+1 and journalist for DER PLATOW Brief; and Andreas Scholz, President of Euro Finance Group.
