Intesa Sanpaolo improves SME sustainability with “CO2 Mitigation Solutions”
11 June 2025
Intesa Sanpaolo supports SMEs through “CO2 Mitigation Solutions”, a programme designed to enhance their sustainability profile and competitiveness. It provides tools to measure their carbon footprint and reduce or offset emissions.
More specifically, with this initiative Intesa Sanpaolo offers companies:
- a carbon footprint measurement tool to define targets and reduction actions across business processes
- a multi-year CO2 emissions reduction pathway consistent with science-based scenarios (Greenhouse Gas Protocol)
- access, for residual emissions, to carbon credits certified by international standards, financing projects with an environmental impact selected by the bank.
Each carbon credit corresponds to one tonne of CO2 avoided, reduced, or removed through a verified environmental project. By purchasing credits, companies support international initiatives with measurable environmental benefits. Intesa Sanpaolo has selected two to this end:
- the “Katingan Peatland Restoration and Conservation Project” to restore 150,000 hectares of tropical peatlands in Indonesia
- the “Kuamut Rainforest Conservation Project” to protect 84,000 hectares of degraded rainforest in Malaysia
with additional benefits for biodiversity and local communities.
"CO2 Mitigation Solutions” is the result of the collaboration between Intesa Sanpaolo’s Banca dei Territori Division and the Government Area Chief Sustainability Officer Governance Area.
With this project, Intesa Sanpaolo further strengthens its commitment to support the sustainable transition of businesses, the protection of natural capital and the fight against climate change.
The initiative is pursued with the technical collaboration of Carbonsink.
