23 February 2026
Intesa Sanpaolo tops the 2026 Innovation Leaders ranking among FTSE MIB companies, according to research conducted by Corriere della Sera in collaboration with Statista. The Bank tops the ranking of listed companies in Italy, confirming innovation as a structural driver of competitiveness and sustainable growth.
Leadership among listed companies
Among listed companies, Intesa Sanpaolo takes first place for Innovation, ahead of other leading industrial and financial groups. Technology is positioned as a major enabler of the 2026-2029 Business Plan, supporting efficiency, risk management and scalability.
Isytech, in particular, is Intesa Sanpaolo’s cloud-native technology architecture: it has already been deployed with success to the Italian retail segment and is a key enabler for expansion into new international markets. By 2029, 100% of applications will be in cloud.
Artificial Intelligence is also a key accelerator of this transformation. AI is integrated into core processes to support increases in productivity, operational efficiency, risk management and internal controls.
Intesa Sanpaolo’s technological transformation is supported by €5.6 billion in IT investments, including artificial intelligence, and by the hiring of approximately 2,430 IT specialists over the last 4 years.
Innovation Leaders 2026: methodology and scope
The survey involved hundreds of companies operating in Italy across sectors ranging from manufacturing and finance to energy, technology, services and infrastructure.
Statista’s methodology combines objective data and qualitative assessments across three equally weighted dimensions:
- product innovation, including patents, trademarks and new market solutions
- process innovation, measured through the adoption of advanced technologies and organisational models
- innovation culture, assessing the ability to foster employee engagement, creativity and internal entrepreneurship.
This integrated framework captures innovation as a long-term capability rather than a one-off initiative.
Innovation and the evolution of the Italian economic system
The 2026 Innovation Leaders rankings outline a system undergoing transformation, with an increasing centrality of sectors characterised by high technological complexity and strong international reach.
The result achieved by Intesa Sanpaolo highlights, in particular, the role played by the banking sector in the technological and organisational evolution of the Italian economic system.
