In Turin, Luca Locatelli's photography explores a new development paradigm
The Gallerie d'Italia-Turin hosts the exhibition "LUCA LOCATELLI. THE CIRCLE. Solutions for a Possible Future": featuring around 70 works, including photographs and video contributions, it offers a journey through Europe in pursuit of experimentation and sustainable industrial progress, touching on topics such as geothermal energy, textile recycling, reconversion of disused industrial areas and food.
Luca Locatelli, commissioned by Intesa Sanpaolo, spent the past two years travelling in search of emblematic, replicable practices and stories that might open up the debate on ecological transition and the state of the planet: the results of his work are presented in worldwide première at the show.
"Supporting new business processes and models, which are urgently needed to counter climate change, has been at the heart of Intesa Sanpaolo's efforts for years.
We hope that these emblematic stories play not only a cultural, but also a persuasive role: insisting on the perspective of circularity, accustoming us to forms of maximum use of goods and resources that can also be replicated in our everyday lives."
Gian Maria Gros-Pietro, Chairman of Intesa Sanpaolo
The stories recount real experiences with nature-based solutions in Austria, France, Germany, Iceland, Norway, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland and also in Italy, with projects in Liguria, Lombardy, Piedmont, Tuscany and Veneto: actions to protect, sustain and restore natural ecosystems that, when applied to industrial and production models, have the potential to trigger the cultural transformation needed to change the course of history.
Luca Locatelli (Pavia, 1971) won first prize in the prestigious World Press Photo in the Environment Stories section in 2020 and has spent many years documenting and researching the most significant experiences in the field of the circular economy.
The exhibition is curated by Elisa Medde, with knowledge support from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation – the world's largest foundation committed to supporting the circular economy, for which Intesa Sanpaolo has been the only financial institution with the role of strategic partner since 2015 – and with the collaboration of the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation and Cariplo Foundation.
Thanks in particular to the collaboration of the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation and the Cariplo Foundation, extensions of the exhibition will be brought to public spaces and suburbs in the cities of Turin and Milan, and in-depth discussions will be organised on topics related to the circular economy.
The project's photography partner is Leica, manufacturer of the cameras used for the images in the exhibition. The photographs are accompanied by static data visualisation works (infographics) and interactive works created for Intesa Sanpaolo by Federica Fragapane.
The Gallerie d'Italia - Turin thus confirms its role as a place for reflection and debate on contemporary issues – particularly those related to social, environmental and economic sustainability.
The Turin museum, together with those of Milan, Naples and Vicenza, is part of Intesa Sanpaolo's Gallerie d'Italia museum project.
The exhibition will be open to the public from 21 September 2023 to 18 February 2024. For more information, visit the Gallerie d’Italia website.
