2024 World Environment Day
On 5 June we celebrated the World Environment Day, an initiative promoted by the United Nations since 1972. This year the theme is # Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration, with the fight against desertification and the protection of ecosystems and biodiversity as focal issues.
The world's ecosystems are, in fact, in danger: more than a fifth of the surface, around two billion hectares, is degraded and fifty-five million people every year, especially the poorest communities and people, are directly affected by drought, making It is increasingly difficult to manage livestock and crops anywhere in the world.
For this reason, Intesa Sanpaolo, in collaboration with Intesa Sanpaolo Innovation Center, promotes the day for the sixteenth consecutive year, promoting an Innovation Coffee on 28 May, ahead of the date. The event, which can be enjoyed online by colleagues and by people external to the bank, intended to explain the role of businesses in protecting natural capital and how, to do so, it is necessary to act with partners capable of providing scientific support. Guest of the meeting was Paolo Viganò, president of Rete Clima, partner of Intesa Sanpaolo for planting activities as part of the Think Forestry project.
The project has the dual objective of safeguarding and enhancing natural capital (contributing to the objective of planting and preserving 100 million trees during the Business Plan) and of accelerating the climate change mitigation process by engaging client companies in a path to reduce CO2 emissions, thanks to the planting service provided by Rete Clima. The project also includes direct interventions by the bank, which resulted in two planting initiatives in Turin and Rome in 2023, and seven initiatives planned for 2024 including Naples, Varese, Benevento, Val Pusteria, already carried out in the first months of year. The project sees the involvement of business and family customers, who can join the initiative through For Funding, Intesa Sanpaolo's crowdfunding platform, aimed at supporting social and environmental initiatives.
