Intesa Sanpaolo's Gallerie d'Italia - Turin hosts the exhibition "MITCH EPSTEIN. AMERICAN NATURE", the American photographer's most important retrospective exhibition, presenting for the first time the most significant photographic series of the last twenty years: American Power, Property Rights and Old Growth.

Curated by Brian Wallis, executive director of the Center for Photography in Woodstock, the exhibition with its photographs explores the conflicts between American society and wilderness in the context of global climate change. More specifically:

  • In American Power, the focus is on how nations and private interests exploit nature, documenting the impact of energy production and consumption on the landscape and the people of the United States.
  • Property Rights investigates the complex dynamics of land ownership in a country founded on colonial expansion and industrial development.
  • Old Growth - of which a part commissioned by Intesa Sanpaolo is presented for the first time - is dedicated to the ancient forests that have survived in remote regions of the United States. With large-format photographs, which immerse visitors in a primordial wilderness, they exalt what mankind is in danger of losing due to the climate crisis.

In addition, in the museum's immersive room, Mitch Epstein's original project is premièred Forest Waves: a video and sound installation of the four seasons in the Berkshire forests, surrounding visitors and accompanying them with a hypnotic soundtrack by musicians Mike Tamburo and Samer Ghadry, recorded in those same forests.

The Turin museum – along with those of MilanNaples and Vicenza – is part of Intesa Sanpaolo's Gallerie d’Italia museum project.

Open to the public from 17 October 2024 to 2 March 2025.
