At the Italy-Serbia Business Forum held in Belgrade on 21 March 2023, Prof. Gian Maria Gros-Pietro, Chairman of Intesa Sanpaolo, was invited to speak in view of the Group's presence in the country with Banca Intesa Beograd.

In his speech, Chairman Gros-Pietro highlighted that:

  • Intesa Sanpaolo's commitment in Serbia is consistent with its strategic presence in the Greater Mediterranean area, a region that includes not only the coastal countries, but also the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkans
  • the area is becoming increasingly important in the current phase of regional reshaping of globalisation dynamics
  • Banca Intesa Beograd is the number-one bank in the country by total assets
  • Intesa Sanpaolo is one of Serbia's growth engines, supporting local entrepreneurs and working to strengthen trade

The Italy-Serbia Business and Science Forum was organised in Belgrade by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, in conjunction with ICE, the Italian Embassy in Belgrade and the Serbian Chamber of Commerce.

Summary of Chairman Gian Maria Gros-Pietro's speech at the Italy-Serbia Business Forum

“Our commitment in Serbia is consistent with our strategic presence in the Greater Mediterranean area, a region that includes not only the coastal countries, but also the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkans. An area that is becoming increasingly important in the current phase of regional reshaping of globalisation dynamics. The related near-shoring and friend-shoring processes highlight the strengths of Serbia and the other countries of the Western Balkans, which are already well integrated into the value chains of Western Europe and Italy, due to their geographical proximity, good levels of technology and labour market development and cultural affinity.

“We have a strong presence in Serbia with Banca Intesa Beograd, the country's leading bank by total assets. We are one of Serbia's growth engines, supporting local entrepreneurs by working to strengthen trade.

“We support and enhance the opportunities that currently characterise the Serbian market. They positively converge with the main strands of interest of the Italian Strategic Plan for the Adriatic-Balkan Region – particularly in the fields of infrastructure, energy, agriculture and health.”
