Climate and resources management

Financed emissions reduction

The Group’s commitment towards net-zero objective was confirmed in 2021 through the adhesion to the main Net-Zero initiatives promoted by UNEP FI and was further reinforced in the 2022-2025 Business Plan. Intesa Sanpaolo has chosen to pursue the net-zero objective by 2050 for all its main business lines, including its own emissions, the lending and investment portfolios, the asset management and insurance divisions.

Target Net-Zero

  • Net-zero objective by 2050 for all main business lines: credit, investments and insurance sector;
  • Since 2022, interim targets for 2030 have been set across various sectors, with reference to emissions financed by lending activities. During 2024, the Group finalized the definition of decarbonization targets for all major high-emitting sectors: oil and gas, automotive, power generation, residential real estate, commercial real estate, agriculture – primary agriculture, aluminum, cement, steel, and coal mining, the latter with a gradual phase-out by 2025.
  • In 2025, the Group confirms that it has achieved the exit from exposures to counterparties active in the coal mining sector, in line with its exclusion policy; a marginal amount remains, mainly attributable to non-performing exposures.
  • As of the end of 2025, the sectors covered by target setting represent 73% of financed emissions related to the non-financial corporate (NFC) portfolio, as identified in the UNEP FI Guidelines for climate target setting for banks. The 2025 results show a 12% reduction in financed emissions in absolute terms compared to 2024 for the sectors covered by the targets.
  • The targets are supported by defined actions summarized in a Sectoral Transition Plan, which integrates and updates the Group’s decarbonization strategy. Intesa Sanpaolo Group’s commitment to decarbonization continues under the new 2026–2029 Business Plan, with confirmation of the 2030 targets related to financed emissions.
  • For further information on the targets defined both in the area of financed emissions and with reference to investment and insurance activities, please refer to Climate Report 2025
