Young inmates: support for the "Wefree Dentro" project against addiction
Intesa Sanpaolo supports the pilot project "Wefree Dentro: prevention and legality to build a future" at the Fornelli Juvenile Detention Institute in Bari, in collaboration with the San Patrignano Foundation.
The initiative envisages the entry of the San Patrignano Community Team into the juvenile detention centre, to share moments of social theatre and activities aimed at sharing an experience of confrontation and dialogue with the young inmates, with the aim of
- offering useful tools to rediscover potential and overcome weaknesses
- leaving the addictions that so often lead to the perpetration of the crimes leading to imprisonment, behind.
With Wefree Dentro, Intesa Sanpaolo continues and strengthens its activities to support the most fragile segments of the population, with particular attention to young people in the penal circuit, a category at high risk of marginalisation and social exclusion.
"Wefree Dentro is part of the line of projects that Intesa Sanpaolo implements and supports for the world of prison and addiction prevention together with the most important Italian third sector realities. Thanks to the collaboration with the San Patrignano Foundation, the initiative offers a different moment for young inmates, bringing them to focus on their own potential and the importance of everyday choices”

Young inmates and addiction - some data

The report also shows that there are more drug addicts in prison than in the community: as at 31 December 2023, there were 26,268 drug-addicted inmates (29% of the total), plus 3,901 persons in the custody of the External Criminal Enforcement Office (Uepe) for alternative measures to detention. There are 26,132 users in the communities.
