Climate and resources management

Green and sustainable culture and initiatives

Financial resources alone are not sufficient to enable the sustainable transformation of businesses and society; for this reason, in the 2022-2025 Business Plan the Group contributes to spreading the environmental and sustainability culture both internally and among its customers and the community, through training and engagement actions, participation in initiatives, associations and debates at national, European and international level, and the production of studies and research.

Reports related to climate

Expanded focus on climate change and sustainability research, publishing
key reports such as the Bioeconomy in Europe Report, the Italian Hydrogen Industry Report, the National Research on Benefit Corporations and studies on green bonds and local transport.

Research activities

Cross-sectional research conducted by Intesa Sanpaolo Innovation Center
applied research projects on AI, neuroscience, and robotics in relation to climate and biodiversity in urban environments

A 2025 neuroscientific study examined environmental attitudes, while research on housing and climate risk showed that exposure to flood risk could reduce property values by up to 4%–8%, depending on the perceived climate risk. In addition, in December 2025 a new initiative was launched to measure urban biodiversity.

Academic collaborations

Strengthen academic collaborations
in particular with Studies and Research for the Mezzogiorno (SMR)

associated with the Intesa Sanpaolo Banking Group, published several reports in 2025, including “Towards a Circular Blue Economy,” which explores the synergies between the blue economy and circularity.

At the European level, Intesa Sanpaolo interacted with legislators, the principal trade associations and other stakeholders to promote and represent the Group's various initiatives on environmental sustainability. Through its office in Brussels, it brings its best practices to the attention of the regulator, carries out training activities for European officials on financial issues to support sustainability and represents the specificities of its context to make them considered during the legislative process.

Events and initiatives

To raise awareness among customers and people of the Group on environmental issues, Intesa Sanpaolo participates in various initiatives for increasingly spreading the culture of sustainability and good practices.

Intesa Sanpaolo sought to raise awareness of environmental issues among individual customers and the wider public by participating in major international events, such as: M’Illumino di Meno, pledged to switch off lights in main offices during specific times to support this energy-saving campaign; World Environment Day, focused on the fight against desertification and the protection of ecosystems and biodiversity; European Week for Waste Reduction, organized by the European Commission. All these campaigns were accompanied by contributions from university researchers as part of events organized in collaboration with the Intesa Sanpaolo Innovation Center.
