Nick Brandt exhibition at Gallerie d’Italia – Turin
17 March 2026
Intesa Sanpaolo presents the exhibition “Nick Brandt. The Day May Break. The Light at the End of the Day” at Gallerie d’Italia – Turin. Curated by Arianna Rinaldo, the exhibition brings together for the first time the four chapters of Brandt’s global photographic series exploring the human and environmental consequences of the climate crisis.
A global photographic project on climate crisis
Started in 2020 during the pandemic, The Day May Break marks a new phase in Nick Brandt’s artistic practice. The project focuses on people, animals and environments affected by environmental destruction in regions that are among the least responsible for climate change yet experience some of its most severe consequences.
At Gallerie d’Italia – Turin the four chapters of the series are presented together for the first time through an immersive exhibition featuring 63 large-scale photographs. The images combine visual intensity and poetic narrative, highlighting the deep interconnection between humans, animals and the natural world.
The fourth chapter of the series was commissioned by Intesa Sanpaolo, reflecting the bank’s commitment to sustainability, social responsibility and culture as a tool to foster awareness.
The four chapters of The Day May Break
The exhibition unfolds across four different geographical and environmental contexts:
- Chapter One – The Day May Break (2021), created in Kenya and Zimbabwe, portrays people affected by cyclones and drought alongside animals rescued from habitat destruction.
- Chapter Two – Sanctuary (2022), photographed in Bolivia, focuses on communities and wildlife threatened by fires, floods and environmental degradation.
- Chapter Three – SINK / RISE (2023), shot in the Fiji archipelago, depicts everyday scenes photographed underwater to evoke the impact of rising sea levels on coastal communities.
- Chapter Four – The Echo of Our Voices (2024), commissioned by Intesa Sanpaolo and produced in Jordan, portrays Syrian refugee families living in conditions of long-term displacement in landscapes marked by water scarcity.
Brandt’s work combines documentary attention with carefully constructed scenes. Each image results from months of preparation, collaboration with local teams and a meticulous process of composition, shooting and printing.
Behind the scenes of the photographic process
A dedicated section of the exhibition explores the making of Brandt’s work. Through photographs and video materials produced during the shooting phases in different countries, visitors gain insight into the creative and logistical process behind the images, in which humans and animals are photographed together within the same frame.
